Survey: VMware vSphere storage reservation

Frank Denneman senior technical marketing architect within the Cloud Infrastructure Product Marketing group at VMware is conducting a survey about storage reservation, a feature coming to vSphere which is currently in development.

The current version of Storage I/O Control provides tools to prioritize and provide fairness to I/O streams of virtual machines. However the current version does not provide a function to specify number of IOPS to guarantee a minimum level. Because the storage subsystem can be shared, external workloads can impact the performance capacity (in terms of IOPS) of the datastores and therefore a guarantee cannot be met temporarily. This is one of the challenges that must be taken into account when developing storage reservations and we must understand how stringent you want the guarantee to be.

You can take the survey here.

Comparison: VMware, Microsoft, Citrix and Red Hat Virtualization Matrix

In January this year, we reported about the extensive community work of Andreas Groth comparing the virtualization features of different virtualization platform vendors. The Virtualization Matrix received an update this week, now including Red Hat’s KVM solution in the comparison. Andreas also updated Citrix to version 6.1 with data from CloudPlatform and updated VMware with its latest Horizon Suite announcement.

The reference matrix, allows you to select and compare license specific capabilities of selected x86 server virtualization technologies, separated by feature category (General, Management, Hypervisor and Extensions). Paper: State of the VDI and SBC union 2013

In October last year, virtualization.info reported on a Survey titled State of the VDI and SBC union hosted by Project Virtual Reality Check (VRC). The Survey has since then been filled in by more than 600 responders and now Project VRC has made the results available in a new paper titled: “State of the VDI and SBC union 2013“. The paper which contains 69 pages is available for download after registration on the Project VRC website.

The paper covers all of the questions asked in the survey, and comes with the following main conclusions:
