VMware launches marketplace for extensions to management and cloud solutions
VMware launched in October the VMware Cloud Management Marketplace. This is a portal from which additional software tools can be downloaded for VMware solutions vCloud Automation Center, vCenter Orchestrator, vCenter Operations Management Suite and vCenter Log Insight.
The out of the box functionality of those 4 products can be extended by downloading add-ons, workflows or blueprints. These are mostly provided by vendors like NetApp, F5, Radware, HP, Infoblox , Cisco and many more. In total there are 100+ plug-ins, workflows and other additions available.
VMware releases several updates to solve security issues
VMware released several security fixes to solve issues on various VMware solutions.
One issue is that an attacker can initiate a Denial of Service on the hostd-vmdb service. This service is used in ESX(i) to manage the host from vCenter Server and vSphere Client. If the hostd-vmdb service is attacked, hosts cannot be managed anymore.
VMware advises a best practise is to use a dedicated, logically isolated network for management of ESX(i) hosts. This network should only be accessible from workstations or servers used by IT-management.
Affected versions are ESXi 5.1, 4.1 and 4.0. Also affected are ESX4.1 and 4.0
Other issues are reported in the vSphere Web Client Server as well as in vCenter and Update Manager which uses Oracle JRE update 1.6.0_51.

Recordings of 17 VMworld Europe Breakout Sessions available free
VMware TV published a couple of recordings of breakout sessions presented at VMworld Europe. The recordings can be watched for free. No account needed.
The interesting thing to note is that VMware seems to be publishing more content of VMware than previously. I believe last year about ten videos were posted. Now sessions that were held at October 17 are put online on the same day. I believe this is very nice and VMware follows Microsoft who publishes content of all TechEd events within 24 hours.
