Release: Microsoft App-V 5.0 Beta 2

Yesterday, Director of Product Management at Microsoft, Karri Alexion-Tiernan, announced on the Windows Blog that the newest version of Microsoft Application Virtualization – App-V 5.0 Beta 2 is availabe for download.
The first beta was announced in April, App-V 5.0 should allow users to access virtually any application and Windows environment anywhere, one of the new features of the new version is the virtualization of Office.
Furthermore they added Reporting, the management of reports on virtual application inventory and utilization, that would allow IT departments to track software assets throughout the enterprise.
The solution also integrates with the System Center Configuration Manager 2012, it would be possible to manage App-V 5.0 Beta 2 virtual applications throughout their lifecycle, and End-to-end programmability, PowerShell automation  has been added to the management server and the sequencer.

VMware announces Q2 2012 earnings

Yesterday VMware announced its financial results for the second quarter of 2012.

Total revenue for the Q2 was $1.12 billion, an increase of 22% compared to Q2 2011 and 7% from Q1 2012.

Looking at the financials we can see how the growing trend of license revenue and software maintenance still holds with respectively 11% and 34% growths.

Closes the services revenue the professional services, up to 23% from Q2 2011.

VMware acquires Nicira

VMware just announced to have signed a definitive agreement for the acquisition of Nicira, Inc., for approximately $1.05 billion in cash plus $210 million of assumed unvested equity awards.
The parties expect the acquisition to close during the second half of 2012.
The acquisition has been approved by the boards of directors of both VMware and Nicira and the stockholders of Nicira.

Nicira, Inc. is specialized in software-defined networking (SDN) and a leader in network virtualization for open source initiatives.

VMware, already a market leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure solutions, relies in this acquisition to expand its networking scenery.

We’re curious to see the implications of this acquisition on the relationship between VMware and Cisco.

New challanges for Rod Johnson, SpringSource CEO

On July 3rd, 2012 Rod Johnson, the australian creator of the Spring Framework and co-founder of SpringSource, announced on his twitter account and officially on the Springsource blog that he is going to leave VMware.

Rod Johnson, Founder and CEO of SpringSource, with over 15 years of experience in Technology and management, and author of “Expert One-on-One J2EE Design and Development” and “J2EE without EJB.” joined VMWare in august 2009 when SpringSource was acquired by VMWare.

The Spring Framework is an open source application framework and Inversion of Control container for the Java platform.

Release: Citrix XenClient Enterprise 4.1

A couple of weeks ago Citrix announced the first full release of XenClient Enterprise after the announcement of Virtual Computer acquisition, during Synergy 2012, XenClient Enterprise 4.1, now included within XenDesktop Enterprise and Platinum.

As Andrew Wood reports in his article, release 4.1 brings big changes, mainly concentrated in what is now called XenClient Enterprise Synchroniser and the need of a Microsoft Hyper-V based environment.

Bertrand Serlet joins Parallels Board of Directors

Today Paralles announced the appointment of Bertrand Serlet, former Senior Vice President (SVP) of Software Engineering at Apple Inc., to its board of directors.

Serlet, in his 14years history at Apple, was one of the supervisors of the release of Apple’s OS X Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard. His role as a non-executive director for Paralles will accelerate growth and integration among Parallels products and Apple’s operating systems.

Cisco acquires Virtuata

Today Hilton Romanski, Cisco VP of corporate development, announced, through a blog post, the acquisition of Virtuata Inc. a private held company located in Silicon Valley and specialized in virtual machine security.

As companies move toward virtualized or cloud solutions, the security of virtual machines, deployed locally or through multiple datacenters or infrastructures, grows in importance.

Cisco, following the example of several startups in the market, acquires, with Virtuata, the competence needed to complete his offering.

Last week VMware announced VMware vFabric Data Director 2.0 that introduces the support for virtualization of Oracle databases on vSphere.

Release: VMware vCenter Server 5.0 Update 1a

Yesterday VMware announced the general availability of VMware vCenter Server 5.0 Update 1a, the firs major update since version 5.0 release.

The main improvements are:

  • vCenter Server 5.0 Update 1a introduces support for the following vCenter Databases
    • Oracle 11g Enterprise Edition, Standard Edition, Standard ONE Edition Release 2 [11.2.0.3] – 64 bit
    • Oracle 11g Enterprise Edition, Standard Edition, Standard ONE Edition Release 2 [11.2.0.3] – 32 bit
  • vCenter Server Appliance Database Support: The DB2 express embedded database provided with the vCenter Server Appliance has been replaced with VMware vPostgres database. This decreases the appliance footprint and reduces the time to deploy vCenter Server further.
