On February 26, Lakeside Software announced integration agreements with technology vendors: Nutanix, Unidesk and World Wide Technology (WWT) to use these vendors’ products within SysTrack MarketPlace.

SysTrack MarketPlace provides analysis for sizing and selecting hardware, software and service infrastructure. The three vendors will integrate into SysTrack MarketPlace as it follows: Nutanix with its converged compute and storage Unidesk will simplify VDI image management and application delivery, and as for WWT report, SysTrack provides a summary of the metrics gathered and describes the infrastructure sizing implications when customers enable workforce with VDI.

VMware has released a paper titled: “VMware View Infrastructure Resiliency: VMware View 5 and VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager“. The paper which contains 15 pages provides insight and information on how to increase availability and recoverability of a View infrastructure using VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager (SRM) and common disaster recovery (DR) tools and methodologies.

Atlantis Computing today released version 4.0 of its storage solution for Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) environments. Version 4.0 now allows customers to run persistent virtual desktops using storage which runs in memory only using deduplication and compression techniques. Atlantis claims this makes the VM faster and cheaper than a physical pc. Atlantis ILIO Diskless VDI was only capable of supporting non-persistent VM’s, this has now been expanded to persistent VMs with the new ILIO Persistent VDI solution.

VMware last week announced a new suite of end-user computing products called the Horizon Suite. The suite bundles a lot of products which either VMware developed themselves, or did acquire in the last couple of years and is part of the vision which VMware already detailed during the VMware Forum in May last year. The suite consists of VMware’s VDI product View which is now called Horizon View, Horizon Mirage and Horizon Workspace. The suite delivers a complete solution for delivering a consistent virtual workspace across different devices. Among View, Mirage and Workspace also the technologies of Project Octopus and AppBlast, Project AppShift, VMware ThinApp and Horizon Mobile are integrated into this product suite.

VMTurbo has released version 3.3. of its virtualization management platform Operations Manager. This version is the follow up of version 3.2. which was released in September last year. VMTurbo Operations Manager provides so called Appliances for Citrix Xen Server, Microsoft Hyper-V, VMWare ESXi and Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV).

Veeam yesterday announced the release of a cloud edition of its Backup & Replication product version 6.5. This edition of the software allows customers to make an offsite backup to a public cloud storage provider and will be provided in an Standard Cloud and Enterprise Cloud version. If you have less than 6 sockets, Veaam also provides a Essentials Cloud Edition. The product supports both the VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V hypervisors.

VMware yesterday announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Virsto Software. Virsto provides virtual storage optimization software for both VMware vSphere but also Microsoft Hyper-V. Virsto claims that it can reduce the cost of storage per desktop as much as 70 procent, by using its storage optimization technology.

Now that VMware is the owner of Virsto, it’s very interesting to see whether it will continue to support the use of its software on the Microsoft Hyper-V hypervisor in the future. It would seem logical to just integrate this software into the vSphere offering, but since also VMware is now focussing on multi hypervisor management this remains to be seen.

Microsoft has made available a new version of the Hyper-V Component Architecture Poster and Companion References for Windows Server 2012. The Component Architecture Poster gives an global overview of Hyper-V functionality in Windows Server 2012 and the Companion References focus on specific features. The posters are in PDF format to be printed in large format.

The paper which contains 61 pages provides unbiased information about application virtualization solutions and is written by Ruben Spruijt, Jurjen van Leeuwen, Rob Beekmans, Sven Huisman, Rory Monaghan and Peter Sterk. For each solution an overview of the available features is created and compared to other solutions in order to provide a comparison.
