Release: VMware Horizon View 6.0

In April this year, VMware announced version 6 of its end user computing suite: Horizon. Yesterday VMware View, the Virtual Desktop Infrastructure and now also the Remote Desktop Services was quietly released by VMware.

Starting with this version VMware not only provides a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) solution based on View, but now also provides a Server Based Computing (SBC) solution leveraging Remote Desktop Services (RDS) from Microsoft. With the addition of SBC, VMware is now capable of publishing applications, where the application runs on a server which is shared with other users at the same time.

Zerto Raises $26 Million in Series D Funding

Zerto has announced that it has closed a $26 million Series D funding. The round was led by Harmony Partners, with participation by Battery Ventures, Greylock IL, RTP Ventures and U.S. Venture Partners.

Zerto provides protection, recovery and migration of data in cloud and virtualized datacenters and is creating aggressive solutions for the market for virtualized disaster recovery services. This funding will allow the company to invest in the acceleration of Hybrid Cloud Adoption.

Red Hat announces Q1 2014 earnings

On June 18 Red Hat announced its financial results for the first quarter of 2014.

Total revenue for the first quarter ended May 31, 2014 was $424 bmillion, with an increase of 17% from the same quarter last year. Looking at the financials details we can see that subscription revenue was of $372 million, up 18% year-over-year,  and operating cash flow of $165 million, up 16% year-over-year.

Release: Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.4

Yesterday Red Hat has announced the global availability of version 3.4 of its Enterprise Virtualization: Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV).

RHEV is based on the Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) hypervisor and in this latest release introduced the support for the new Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 but especially an enhanced support for OpenStack, a technology where Red Hat is investing vigorously in this period, like the ability to import Glance (the OpenStack Image Service) images as templates to use them to deploy new virtual machines and the ability to create and delete networks on external Neutron (the OpenStack Networking Service) providers.

Citrix hires new Chief Technology Officer for Desktop and Apps Group

Citrix yesterday announced that it has hired former Gartner analyst, Gunnar Berger as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for the Desktop and Apps Group. Gunnar Berger is one of the many Gartner analysts which joins a big technology company in the recent months. First, in January this year ex Gartner analyst Chris Wolf joined VMware as CTO for Americas and later virtualization.info and cloudcomputing.info founder and ex-Gartner analyst Alessandro Perilli joined Red Hat to become General Manager of the Open Hybrid Cloud program.

Berger started his IT career in 1998, and before joining Gartner was System Specialist at Teradici and Directory of End User Computing ad LogicsOne which is now called GreenPages. He worked at Gartner for almost 2 1/2 years.

Release: Symantec Backup Exec 2014

Earlier this month Symantec released edition 2014 of its comprehensive backup suite: Backup Exec.

What distinguishes this latest version from the previous is the effort that Symantec has invested in the integration of the product into the virtualized infrastructures, leveraging technologies like Microsoft VSS and VMware’s VADP,  in order to provide a unified solution able to cover also the physical machines still in production in many datacenters.

The product also supports multi-hypervisor environments allowing the management of vCenter and Hyper-V hosts together in the same console.

Symantec Backup Exec 2014 also integrates V2P (virtual to physical) and P2V (physical to virtual) features, this last one in particular turns it into a good candidate as a consolidation tool that could fit well for the SMB.

Release: Docker Docker Engine 1.0

Docker today announced the release of version 1.0 of its container virtualization solution.

Docker provides so called container virtualization, allowing an application and its dependencies to run as an isolated process inside a virtual environment. This environment is then portable from local computers to backend infrastructure and cloud. Docker uses LinuX Containers (LXC) running in the host OS allowing you to share the resouces available to the host.
