You can use the Disk2vhd tool on an online system, because it leverages the Volume Snapshot capabilities in order to create consistent Point-in-Time snapshots available in the OS.
Disk2vhd runs Windows XP SP2, Windows Server 2003 SP1, and higher, including x64 systems.
