VMware has released a paper titled: "Virtual SAN 6.0 Performance: Scalability and Best Practices". The paper which contains 23 pages investigates how VMware Virtual SAN performs and scales for multiple workloads, Virtual SAN caching tier designs, and Virtual SAN configuration parameters. The paper provides guidelines on how to get the best performance for applications deployed on a Virtual SAN cluster.
The paper contains the following sections:
- Executive Summary
- Introduction
- Virtual SAN Cluster Setup
- Hybrid Virtual SAN Cluster Experiments
- All-Flash Virtual SAN Cluster Experiments
- Conclusion
- Hardware Configuration
Conclusion:
It was observed that Virtual SAN scales extremely well with an increase in the cluster size and an increase in the number of disk groups. Excellent performance was demonstrated for cached random access workloads and for sequential access workloads on the hybrid Virtual SAN cluster. The All-Flash Virtual SAN cluster shows excellent performance and outperforms the Hybrid Virtual SAN cluster for random access workloads with very large working set
