Release: VMware vCenter Operations 1.0

Posted by Kenneth van Surksum   |   Wednesday, March 9th, 2011   |

VMware has announced the release of vCenter Operations which combines the analytics technology from the Alive VM product, the capacity analytics and planning technology from CapacityIQ and the configuration analytics and management technology from Configuration Manager. With this release Vmware is planning to compete with technology from BMC, IBM Tivoli, HP OpenView and Microsoft’s System Center line of products.

CapacityIQ is an evolution from the technique which VMware acquired in 2005 from AOG, Configuration Manager was acquired from VMware’s parent company EMC in March last year and Alive VM comes from Integrien, which VMWare acquired in September last year. In December VMware decided to offer the Alive VM product for free to customers purchasing vSphere or other products.

vCenter Operations provides performance, capacity and configuration analytics for management of highly virtual infrastructures and cloud infrastructures. It does so by analyzing and correlating data across the monitored IT infrastructure in a pretty unique way: for each tracked resource, it can identify the normal behavior of every metric (which implies a dynamic adjustment of thresholds) and then automatically recognize an anomaly. Capacity Management is provided to enable users to users to analyze, forecast, and plan the capacity needs of their virtual datacenter environment. Configuration and Compliance Management is provided by collecting, fixing, provisioning and managing configurations.

Information is provided in Dashboards and the product integrates with vCenter vSphere, but is capable of managing other infrastructures as well.

vCenter Operations will be provided in three editions:

  • Standard – Providing Performance, Real-Time Capacity and Configuration Change functionality for virtualized environments.
  • Advanced – Providing the capabilities of Standard plus Capacity Planning for virtualized environments
  • Enterprise – Providing the capabilities of Advanced plus Configuration and Compliance Management and integration with other products from VMware and other 3rd party solutions, like HP Openview, IBM and Microsoft System Center Operations Manager. Enterprise is provided for virtualized and physical environments.

The first versions of these editions will be available in late Q1 with prices starting at $50 per VM for the Standard version.
