This week, during the Management Summit (MMS) 2010 conference, Microsoft showed some of the features that customers will see in the next version of System Center product family, due in 2011.

virtualization.info followed the live keynotes (day 1 and day 2) and reported a few notes on Twitter.
One of the most significant things said on stage is that next version of Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) will introduce support for the upcoming server-side version of App-V, apparently officially titled Server App-V.
It’s quite safe to assume that Server App-V won’t come out before next year if its management console is due for that timeframe.

Microsoft summarized some of the key information provided during the event on its corporate blog Dynamic Data Center Alliance:

  • Service lifecycle management, including creation, deployment and updates to cloud apps/services [SCVMM]
Leverages app virtualization technology and service modeling to perform image-based service composition, deployment and updates.
  • Creation of private clouds [SCVMM]
Enables “Infrastructure as a Service” for the enterprise datacenter and allows self-service scenarios; discovery and assignment of logical/virtualized network and storage pools to apps/services
  • Federation across clouds [SCVMM]
Enables workload mobility between on-premises, service provider and public clouds (e.g. Windows Azure) in a secure manner
  • Policy-based dynamic resource optimization [SCVMM]
Ensure optimal utilization of your datacenter resources (e.g. policy driven power management), deeper Operations Manager/PRO integration
  • Deeper Opalis Integration [SCVMM]
Offers deeper integration with Opalis for enhanced orchestration and automation across multiple sub-systems
  • Unified on-premises and cloud monitoring [SCOM]
Enables hybrid cloud deployment scenarios with “single pane of glass” monitoring
  • Outside-in/end user experience monitoring for geo distributed cloud services [SCOM](based on synthetic transactions)
  • Service oriented network and storage monitoring [SCOM] (e.g. monitor and troubleshoot network and storage resource pools assigned to services)

Note that Microsoft talks about a “deeper” integration between SCVMM and the Opalis orchestration framework, acquired in December 2009, because a first connection between them is already planned for Q3 2010.
